SORM About the Author

I’ve always loved to read and cut my teeth on books such as The Forest of Mystery, Robin Hood, and Nancy Drew. I grew up a devout tomboy, back when Silicon Valley wasn’t even a gleam in San Jose’s eyes. Boy, was it different then! I love to live life to its fullest, from back when I used to ride hell-bent-for-leather on my Appaloosa in gymkhanas to surf-fishing in Hawaii, jumping boulders on the breakwater in Morro Bay to walking barefoot on the beach. Many of my story ideas were found during travels far and wide, from Corpus Christi TX, where my ancestors are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery to Pendleton OR. From Tucson, AZ to Seattle WA to Vancouver BC. I’m always looking for that next story, that next place to bury the body. Or kiss the hot guy. I kick-ass and take names in beautiful Portland, Oregon with my amazingly talented son and daughter-in-law and their most affectionate cat Nudge.

Culinary Seduction by Merritt Kelly

Food is the new sex and cheftestants Andrea Claire and Danny Miller are battling it out to see who becomes the new high priest or priestess. The two face off in a contest for hosting duties of new show called Culinary Seduction. Chef Andrea Claire is a woman who knows what she wants, and what she wants is to build her own culinary empire. Hosting the show would give her the injection of cash she needs to finally get a store front for her catering business and give her the credibility she seeks. Her food is infused with her warmth and passion.

Bad boy chef Danny Miller’s bold flavors and state-of-the-art techniques in molecular gastronomy set him apart from the pack. Hosting the show would raise the profile of his restaurant and he could pay what he owes the bank and his grandmother. Will his talent be enough to garner him the win? Or will Andre’s seductive on camera personality and obvious passion for cooking win out? Their on air chemistry is undeniable. The test kitchens at Cuisine Channel have never been so hot!

SORM Excerpt
He raced toward the pantry to gather ingredients. His mind was sharp, clear, and he was in the zone. He almost felt like he was back home at his restaurant. It surprised him that he was so calm.

He grabbed the essential equipment from the appliance closet at the back of the kitchen. It would cost him a small fortune to purchase all the equipment lined up on the metal shelves before him. Some of it he didn’t even recognize. To the untrained eye, it looked more like a science classroom supply closet than a chef’s kitchen. There were injectors and centrifuges, torches, a refractometer, sodium citrate, a vacuum sealer, powdered everything, even liquid nitrogen.

For the first time in his culinary career, he could make whatever he wanted and he didn’t have to make a trip to the store or restaurant supply warehouse. He didn’t think he’d have to fight anyone for the anti-griddle or the Gastrovac. He glanced over at Andrea. Some chefs liked to compare the way cooked to the way they make love. Some were messy but passionate. You could taste the love and passion even if the plate wasn’t pretty. Some would create a beautiful plate but the food was flavorless, without soul.

He was willing to bet that she had a lot of passion, in the kitchen as well as in the bedroom. He’d love to have those long legs wrapped around him. He wanted to find out how passionate she was. He chided himself for being distracted. It didn’t matter that she was hot or that he found himself behaving like a horny teenager, she was still the competition.

He smiled at her. “Well, at least one thing has gone my way today.”

A bolt of lightning flashed nearby, startling Cassidy with its crackling thunder, but his admiring stare unnerved her far more than the sound around them. “I’ll… um… be late for class.” She backed away from him as the rain continued to pummel the footbridge. She’d only taken a step or two when his hand grasped her arm.

“Wait, please! Classes must have been cancelled because the entrance to the science building was locked. I’m on my way home. May I walk you back to the dorm?”

Cassidy nodded. “I live in Brantley Hall.”

“Ah, well, that’s two things that have gone my way today,” he said, tightening his hold on her arm. “Let’s get out of this rain.”

Saving Alexander by Susan Mac Nicol

January 25, 2016 Spotlight 3

Saving AlexanderGenre: MM Romance

Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

SORM Excerpt
Sage boarded the tube on the way to Chelsea to meet Dan for a drink at lunchtime and plan Sage’s move to London. He held onto the rail, thinking about Alexander Montgomery as the tube hurtled toward Sloane Square. The novelist was certainly a very attractive man and had the bonus of batting for his side to boot. Sage had watched the re-run of the man’s last interview on the television last night in an effort to see whom he was getting involved with. Montgomery was about thirty, he guessed, with short, brush-cut black hair, pale skin and those incredible eyes in an extremely sexy package. Tall and lithe, his shoulders broad and taut from what Sage had managed to see despite the closely buttoned up shirt. He’d been very aloof and contained. Sage’s comment about googling him had certainly made the man uncomfortable. Sage wondered what he was trying to hide.

He’d been very attracted to the other man, the spicy smell of his aftershave alluring, the intense and brooding expression on his face one that Sage would love to replicate in a film scene.

Well, he wasn’t going to lose sleep over it.

He’d sworn off relationships for the short term. The only men he was interested in were the ones who serviced his needs and went home in the morning.

SORM Excerpt
From Amanda Mariel’s Enchanted by the Earl featured in Once Upon A Regency:

Hunter watched the sway of Miss Woodcourt’s hips as she strolled ahead of him. The way those breeches hugged her curves begged for his attention. He could not help but take note of her shapely legs, rounded derriere, and the flair of her hips. For a split second, he contemplated pulling her into his arms and ravishing her right there in the street.

The woman was off limits. An innocent, and he would not tarnish her, especially when he knew they could never wed. He tore his gaze from her luscious body, and tossed a glance at Sinclair, grateful his friend walked in front of her. The thought of the viscount admiring her assets caused his blood to heat. Pure madness, yet he seemed powerless to stop his reactions to her.

A scowl marred Rose’s dirty face as she glanced back at him. Hunter’s pulse sped at the sight of her displeasure. She must be miffed over the way he had handled her. With a weak smile, he stepped past her and reached for the door.

He did not care for the effect she had on him. The sooner they got this over with, the better. He withdrew a small tool and began to poke within the lock’s chamber.

“It refuses to budge. I need something longer.” He glanced over his shoulder. Sinclair stood so close to Miss Woodcourt, their arms touched. A ping of discomfort raced through him. Jealousy? He had to get away from this woman before she drove him to Bedlam.

Rose removed her hat, ran a hand across her auburn tresses, and pulled out a hatpin. “Try this.”

“Have you a history of breaking and entering?” Sinclair teased her.

Hunter’s body heated in anger, pulse throbbing in his neck. He did not want Sinclair teasing Miss Woodcourt, touching her, or even standing close to her.

What was going on with him? She meant nothing to him. He only helped because he was unable to ignore her plight. It was lust, plain and simple. Once he returned her home, these feelings would cease. For now, he needed to focus on gaining entry to Wolfe’s office.

Rose gave a quick smile and shook her head. “No, but I knew I would need something if I wished to open the lock. My pin was all I could think of.”
Hunter took the hatpin from her. His fingers tingled where they brushed hers.

“See? I told you I would be of use.” She winked.

He raised a brow at her scandalous behavior before turning back to the door. The woman was positively vexing. That she even imagined breaking into Wolfe’s office angered him. Still, her calculated plan was impressive.

Had he and Sinclair not had the same idea, she may have pulled her mission off without incident. He had never known a woman who would dare dream up such a thing, let alone attempted to carry it out, breeches and all.

“It should do the trick.” Hunter pushed the pin in the lock, wiggled it, and gave the pin a slight turn. The mechanism gave with a click. He allowed the door to open a crack before he pulled the pin out. “Sinclair, let us know if anyone comes.”

The viscount offered a nod before moving to the corner of the building.

Miss Woodcourt held her hand out. “My hatpin, please.”

Hunter put the pin in her palm before pushing the door open farther. He stepped aside for her. “After you.”

She entered the office without a word, leaving a trail of rose-scented air in her wake.

With a last glance at Sinclair, Hunter stepped into the office and closed the door behind them. He took another step into the dark space and suddenly her body was pressed against him. Instinctively, he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close.

Her soft form molded to him as if she were made to fit against him. Still embracing her, he gently moved her to his side before she could feel the effect she was having on him.

She pushed his arm away and stepped from his embrace. “We need light.”

The cool night air quickly replaced the warmth of her body. He scowled, already missing her closeness. Bloody hell. She would be his undoing if he did not return her home posthaste.

Scandalous Intentions by Amanda Mariel

January 18, 2016 Spotlight 0

Scandalous IntentionsGenre: Historical Romance

When faced with losing his father’s support, notorious rake Lord Julian Luvington sets his sights on Lady Sarah. She is as respectable as they come, just what his father ordered. But the lady shall not be easily won.

Lady Sarah Roseington is determined to marry for love or not at all, and she will do anything to obtain the freedom granted to men. A blackguard like Lord Luvington could destroy her hard-won reputation, but marriage to him also offers her the opportunities she cannot achieve on her own. What’s a lady to do?

When Lord Luvington refuses to abandon his pursuit, Lady Sarah proposes an arrangement. Only the price may be more than either bargained for. Lady Sarah could lose more than her social standing and Julian could lose his heart.

SORM Excerpt
She pushed out a sigh as Lord Luvington lead her toward a stone bench nestled among the lush green hedge.

“Shall we sit for a moment? I wish to explain.” He pressed his arm against her hand then loosened it again.

She looked away. “Very well. Though I cannot imagine what you might say to change things.” She hesitated for a moment, reluctant to release her grip on him before she lowered herself onto the bench. The stone’s cool exterior seeped through her skirts, a welcome contrast to the warmth radiating through her. She rested one hand on her lap and waved her fan with the other.

Lord Luvington positioned himself on the bench a smidgen closer than was proper, angling himself so he faced her. The fresh spring scents of foliage and flowers took on a heady intensity as she stared fixedly at the hedge in front of her. Her face flamed though she could not credit it to the heat of the atmosphere.

She needed to take control of the situation before it swept her away. “Speak your piece and be done with it. I do not wish to linger over long.” He flashed a toe-curling grin just before she glanced away.

“What I said in the park was the truth. Is the truth. But there is more to it than just my need of a respectable wife.”

“Do tell.” She lowered her fan to her lap, its ribbons trailing in the breeze.

“I have come to care for you, admire you, even. You are a fascinating and attractive woman.”

She plucked at her satin skirts as the heat climbed back into her face.

“It is true that I will no longer receive my stipend if I fail to secure a proper society wife. It is the very reason I began looking for one. I shall not deny it, but nor is it the reason I continue to pursue you.” He reached up and brushed a curl that had escaped her bonnet away from her cheek.

His fingers left a tingling trail in their wake, and something inside her began to crumble. She glanced down at the path they had just walked.

“I would like the chance to make this right. Allow me to court you, Lady Sarah. Let us discover if there might be something real between us.”

She glanced at him, unsure how to respond. Her mind screamed no, but her heart and soul begged for him. She wanted to reach out and run her hand across his strong jaw, feel his lips pressed against hers, discover what it felt like to be in his arms.

“Spend the rest of the party in my company, Lady Sarah. Grant me one afternoon to change your mind.”

A wave of tingles ran down her and congregated in her abdomen at his smile. This was dangerous, and she knew it. And yet…

Tiger Lily by Wende Dikec

January 15, 2016 Spotlight 0

TigerLilyTakeTwo.v4.AmazonGenre: Young Adult

Lily Madison thought dying because of a bad manicure was the worst thing that could happen. She was wrong.

Waking up in the hospital and realizing she’s being stalked by an entire herd of naughty little ghosts turns her entire world upside down. She begins to doubt her own sanity until she realizes she isn’t alone. A Goth girl named Zoe can see the ghosts, too.

Most of the ghosts look like fuzzy blobs, but one is not blobby at all. He’s a very hot, very annoying dead guy named Nick. Although they dislike each other on sight, Nick soon realizes Lily is his only hope. With the help of Zoe and Mr. Wan, the manicurist who almost killed her, she has only days to get Nick and the other ghosts back where they belong or the whole world will be in terrible danger.

But sending the ghosts back means saying goodbye to Nick forever, and Lily isn’t sure she’ll ever be able to let him go.

SORM Excerpt

I died because of a bad manicure. It wasn’t a nasty fungal infection from the manicurist using dirty equipment, or a cut that allowed deadly bacteria to creep under my skin and rot me from the inside out. I died because on impulse I let Mr. Wan of Wan Fine Lady Nail Salon paint my nails a color called Pretty and Pink.

With my red hair and pale skin, pink is tricky, but I trusted Mr. Wan. When he told me, “New color, big discount for you, Lily Madison,” I didn’t realize he actually meant, “Bad color, nobody else wants it.”

I’ve never been a risk taker. My idea of living on the edge was not having an extra bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse. I knew the pink would be a mistake, but I ignored my inner voice. I guess the smell of acetone and the hum of the nail dryers had lulled me into such a relaxed state that I didn’t realize how awful the color actually looked until I drove home.

Pretty and Pink was false advertising, but as I learned long ago in my ninth grade science fair project, neither the government nor the FDA regulates the names of nail polish colors. I didn’t have a case, but I felt extremely upset.

I didn’t see the ice cream truck stopped in the middle of the road. I was staring at my nails, wishing I’d gone with my first choice, Princesses Rule!, a frosty pale pink that would have enhanced my natural skin tone. I glanced up just in time to narrowly avoid hitting the truck and several small children caught in a snow-cone-induced feeding frenzy.

It’s funny how accidents happen in slow motion. I remember the shocked faces of the people on the street as I swerved and flew over a small embankment. Someone screamed, and it took me a full second to realize the high-pitched wail came from my own mouth. I’d started screaming the minute I’d steered away from the ice cream truck, screamed some more as my car became an airborne missile, and continued screaming until it landed in the deep, murky waters of Lake Eugene.

I tried to open my door, but it refused to budge. My windows wouldn’t roll down either. I pressed the buttons anyway, even the one on the dashboard to turn on the radio, but none of them worked except my hazard lights. I didn’t know I had hazard lights, although I’d read all about them in my driver’s ed class. They blinked on and off, illuminating the darkness around me with an eerie, red, pulsating beacon.

I unbuckled my seat belt and searched for something to break a window with, but couldn’t find anything. I swung my purse at it, pounded it with the heel of my shoe, and even tried stabbing it with my nail file. I reached for my phone to call for help, but it was too late.

Secret Angel by Cherry Christensen

January 12, 2016 Spotlight 1

Secret Angel - LogoGenre: Christian Fiction Romance

Doctoral student Hannah Wagganer entertains dreams of teaching at a large university and leaving her hometown of Glen Arbor behind. That is until Jasper Morgan, the new mail carrier, arrives in town. Not only does he set Hannah’s heart a flutter, but he has an instant bond with her cat, Jingles.

Preparing for the church candlelight Christmas Eve service and running the family store, Hannah continues to bump into Jasper—and the prying eyes of the locals who suspect there’s more going on than business as usual.

Blessings and suspicions abound when an anonymous donor pays to have the church furnace repaired, and other locals suddenly find solutions to their problems. Is it coincidental, or the work of a secret angel?

SORM Excerpt
Hannah jolted to a halt, swallowing hard. Footsteps overhead in the apartment warned her it wasn’t a customer.

“We have an uninvited guest,” she whispered to Jingles. The cat meowed in response and jumped down, running in the direction of the store room. Hannah tiptoed over to the counter and retrieved one of her dad’s old golf clubs.

Creeeeak.

She hefted it to her shoulder, holding it like a baseball bat as the creaking sounds on the stairs grew closer. A large shadow appeared at the bottom of the steps. She gulped and swung the golf club, striking the banister.

“Put that thing away before you hurt yourself,” the stranger said, stepping into the light streaming through the bay windows. He adjusted the mail bag slung over his shoulder. “Do you always leave your front door wide open?”

Vengeance Is Sweet by Karenna Colcroft

January 11, 2016 Spotlight 0

200Omara is a demon of vengeance, created to destroy humans who have harmed the innocent and bring their souls to Hell. Known for bending the rules to the breaking point, Omara is placed on probation after one too many infractions. Confined to her apartment, visited only by her friend Ghast, Omara chafes under the punishment.
A battle between two factions of beings and entities, one wanting to kill millions of humans and the other wanting to protect humanity, decimates the vengeance department, and Omara is called back to work. Her first assignment: “venge” Alejandro Ruiz, accused by the soul of his late ex-wife of abusing her and their six-year-old daughter Keeley.
Something about the case strikes Omara wrong, and she chooses to try to prove Alex’s innocence. As she becomes part of Alex and Keeley’s lives, Omara also becomes more and more human. Then she learns that the accusations against Alex are part of a plot to destroy Keeley, who is far more than she seems. To protect the humans she has come to love, Omara will do anything–including sacrificing her own existence.

SORM Excerpt

Ghast walked over and stood beside us. At first I thought Keeley didn’t notice him. Then she said, “He’s like Jochiel.”
Ghast didn’t answer right away, the only sign of how much she’d rocked him with her statement. “Who’s Jochiel?” he asked.
“My friend.”
“How am I like him?” Ghast crouched to better hear her reply.
“You’re the same thing he is.” Obviously she had chosen to be vague to keep from giving away the truth about Jochiel. “You know what you are, and he’s the same thing. I’m glad. That means you keep Omara safe like Jochiel keeps me safe.”
Although she recognized Ghast as an angel, she apparently didn’t know what I was. Maybe she didn’t have enough experience with demons to recognize one. If so, that was a good thing. It meant the only other demons she’d encountered had been the ones who’d taken her from school.
Whatever the reason, I thanked the Creator that she hadn’t figured me out.
The female officer hurried to us. “We can go inside. We’ll have to stay in the children’s room, though. They’re still collecting evidence in the other room. A couple witnesses claim they saw a fight, even though none of the fighters seem to still be here.”
I looked at Ghast. He gave me an almost imperceptible head shake. Somehow he’d convinced the officers he had nothing to do with the events in the main room. I’d stick with that. The police probably wouldn’t have reacted very well to finding out the fight had been between an angel and a demon. Or between Jack Smith and whatever Tertarch might have decided to call himself. People sometimes wound up in jail for fighting in public. I preferred not to see that happen to Ghast.
“I’m cold,” Keeley complained.
“Come on, sweetheart.” The officer held out her hand.
Keeley pressed closer to me. I stood and picked her up, and followed the officer with Ghast right behind me.
