SORM Excerpt

She allowed her friend to drag her back toward the dressing rooms while poor Cherri followed with gigantic piles of clothing and undergarments. Thank goodness they were currently the only customers in the place, there was no way she would parade in front of others in what they will make her try on.

After a while she had to admit the two women had a certain high-class taste for suggestive yet sensual clothing. Ten or more outfits later, her nervousness faded. She was starting to look at this as an adventure. Mel as well as Cherri voiced their opinions on different outfits. Some of their comments shocking her, while others had her laughing outright. Quite a few times, Melanie needed to rush in to help Lauren with the intricacies of some of the attire. One dress happened to be mostly straps which strategically covered only the naughty bits.

“A no way on this one,” she called out, “I want my body to look sexy, not red from all the rubbing.”

A variety of little black dresses slipped on and off her body in a matter of moments. Flaws with each of them. “I don’t know black isn’t the best color for me. It makes me look washed-out. Let’s try some other colors.”

Cherri quickly selected more dresses, bustiers, thigh-high stockings, and barely-there thongs. Trying each on, Lauren felt like a live Barbie doll. They’d pick out the clothes. She’d try them on then parade for their approval. None of the outfits screamed the one yet.

A blue jersey dress with a sweeping hemline caught Lauren’s gaze. “If I need help getting into these here, who’s going to help me get dressed in Chicago?” Lauren shouted. She pulled the blue dress over her head. The fabric hugged her figure. The uneven hemline made her legs look even longer. Hmm. This one isn’t bad. Lauren twirled in the mirror to get the full effect. She ran her hands over her waist then down her hips, feeling the silky fabric under her hands. The dress hugged her curves, making her feel sexy. She opened the curtain with a flourish.

“Oh wow!”

Lauren smiled at Melanie’s encouraging reaction.

“Your date will be helping you out of that dress! Damn girl. You look so good. The neckline shows off your girls and the blue makes your eyes seem bigger, too. This dress is a keeper. This guy is definitely going to want to strip you and eat you alive when he sees you.”

The pile of clothes to try on dwindled down to nothing while the pile of keepers grew exponentially. The black dresses lay discarded along with the strap number. The corsets and bustiers—also no-gos. Those outfits made her feel like a dominatrix—way outside her comfort zone. The black widow corset she’d tried on only made Cherri and Melanie laugh before suggesting they buy her a whip.

Wolf’s Strength – Caedmon Series by Ambrielle Kirk

April 5, 2014 2014, Upcoming Tour 1

SOR Wolf's Strength VBT BannerGenre: Paranormal

Tension grows between old rivals…

Cold-blooded murder sparks a feud that could lead to the deadliest civil war in Pack history. Alpha Devin Caedmon and his council are tempted to risk all that is precious to protect their bloodline. Tristan Arnou, the rival Pack’s leader, isn’t the only force trying to tear down the unity holding them together. All threats must be eliminated before their entire race is destroyed.

Forbidden love burns like a wildfire… There is one woman who Blake DeLuca loves more than anything else: Naomi Valentine. Despite the escalating battle and power struggles among their leaders, the erotic fire between these two lovers has yet to be extinguished. Naomi’s heart belongs to Blake, but her allegiance lies with Arnou. She’s left with two choices…assume her duty or accept Blake’s eternal bond?

In Wolf’s Strength secrets are exposed, and memories that were buried long ago have resurfaced. The game of deception is a deadly one. There can be no peace until the bloodshed ends.

SORM excerpt

“Why, Naomi? Why do we have to go on like this?”

She swallowed. “There are a million reasons why, and you’re aware of every single one of them.”

“Let’s run away. Somewhere far…and then we won’t have to worry about it.”

That had been the plan when they were young, but now they were adults with important responsibilities.

“Stop talking nonsense. You know that’s impossible. You have your duty and I have mine.” As she said this, she glimpsed a bit of remorse in his eyes, but there was something strange mixed with it. “You’re different.

Your eyes are…”

“Then the news hasn’t reached your Pack?” he inquired.

“There are traitors among Arnou. Tristan and his Council are selective about whom they share information with.” She peered across the other side of the building, sensing her brothers had not left the area. “I have to go.”

“Wait!” He tightened his grip on her hand and lifted a brow. “What do you mean traitors?”

She nodded. “Real traitors. Apparently, vital secrets were released about Arnou’s plan for our Pack. Tristan has interrogated many suspects. He threatens the life of any who cross him.”

Blake’s nose flared and his fingers tightened on her waist. “Get out before it’s too late.”

“It is too late,” she said firmly. “Back to the subject. What news are you referring to?”

“I don’t want you concerned.”

“Really? Or is it because you think word will reach Arnou after you’ve told me?”

Blake grinned but only for a split second. “Trust me, your leader knows what happened. Maybe he’s ashamed to admit his failure to his followers.”

“What failure?”

In that moment his eyes grew red and he stared at her under heavy dark eyelashes. She tried to pull away, but his firm hold on her prevented them for parting.

“What’s been missing for centuries that both Alphas want?”

Naomi narrowed her eyes. “They both want absolute power of the North American territories. But what do you mean? What has been missing?”

“It’s been so long, but have you forgotten already?” He lowered his voice as he spoke this time.

“As an Elite we’re handpicked to guard the Alpha, eliminate his threats, and clean up after his messes. I’m not paid, nor do I make it my priority to delve into anything else.”

“Ah…is that so? You and I both know you don’t follow Arnou’s rules to the T.” He slid his nose against the side of her neck, causing her to shiver against him. “I’m a threat to your leader and the pledge you made to him, am I not?”

Naomi bit her bottom lip as Blake’s canines replaced his nose against her throat. “Just tell me what the fuck you’re talking about. What is missing?”

His manhood hardened against her belly. “What should I do with that naughty mouth of yours, huh?” He pressed his hot tongue against her pulsing jugular.

Her knees buckled as he released the pheromones from his tongue and awakened her wolf. It was his way of marking her internally, and her hungry pores absorbed all of it.

“Tell me,” she urged.

“I—”

A long howl from the distance startled them both. It was Nathan warning her she needed to hurry.

“Come with me—permanently,” Blake demanded without releasing her. “And you’ll know everything.”

“No.” She pulled out of his embrace. “I have to go before someone discovers us. Why are you still here?

You’ll get caught too.”

“I know the sheriff downstairs. We’ll handle the cover up.”

“Must be nice to have ranking in the human world.”

His lips spread into a smile. “The sheriff isn’t humankind.”

“Figures.” Caedmon royalty had connections like that inside as well as outside the shifter world. It almost made her think they had more of a chance than her Arnou leader.

Blake frowned. “How do you expect me to protect you from so far away?”

“You left me years ago.” She pointed at his chest. “You should have thought about that before you made that decision.”

“Don’t…” He tried to reach her, but she continued to back away. “You still want to use that against me? We agreed to a plan years ago. You didn’t follow through.”

She swallowed. He was right. At the last minute she’d all but betrayed him. “I would go with you, but just like it was years ago, there is more than my life at stake.”

Fighting new found feeling of desire and finally facing her magickal heritage takes its toll on her sanity, making her question everything and everyone. Who can Alex trust and will her growing powers be enough to save her from the fate awaiting her?

SORM excerpt

The song ended and the tempo of the music slowed. His hands wrapped around her waist pressing his muscled hips and thighs against her. She followed the slow sensual movement of his body. Fingers lightly stroked her back, mesmerizing her with their touch.

Alex felt the warmth of his breath at the base of her neck, stirring the embers of the fire Rumor had started earlier. The words to the song seeped into her brain fogging her thoughts with the sensual undertones they inspired.

Rumor leaned in taking advantage of their closeness. Warm lips caressed the sensitive side of her throat, shivers moved through her body. Alex tilted her head slightly, giving him greater access to her slender neck. A soft moan escaped her lips. His tongue licked its way up the side of the neck behind her ear, gently nipping the tip of the lobe. Desire flowed through the blood in her veins, taking with it her resistance. Rumor whispered something low and seductive in her ear as his wolf emerged taking control of the man.

“What did you say?” She stopped moving. The music blasted around them, everyone else moving, dancing.

“I asked if you wanted to go find a room in the back.” His hands moved down her back to slide over curvy hips, drawing them back against him as he began to move again.

“Do you really think I’m the kind of girl that’s gonna hop in the sack with you after knowing you a couple of hours?” Alex jerked out of his embrace. Anger flowed through her taking control. “Think again, buster. I don’t know what kind of girl you’re used to dating but I’m not a whore for the pack.”

“I know you want me, Alex. I can smell your desire.” He pulled her roughly against him. His wolf was on edge, the smell of her arousal overriding his common sense.

Alex could feel how excited he was. She didn’t need a nose for that. “I do want you but that doesn’t mean I’m going to do anything about it tonight.” Alex’s eyes flashed angrily conveying the fury within.

“You can’t blame me, Alex.” He leaned and sniffed her neck. “You smell like you’re in heat. You know how it affects wolves.”

“So, this is my fault? Sorry Rumor, not a good enough excuse.” Her hand moved from her waist, traveling slowly down between them. He felt the point of the knife pressed up against the leather of his pants at the base of his scrotum. “I’m only going to say this once.” A sudden chill hung on the edge of her words. “Take your hands off me now. I won’t hesitate to neuter you. Believe me I know how to do it and what I cut up I don’t fix. You’ll have to find another doctor.”

War’s End by Imogene Nix

February 25, 2014 2014, Upcoming Tour 0

SOR War's End VBT BannerGenre: Sci-fiction Romance

Forced apart by war five years ago, Renjiro and Selina have another chance at love. Can they make it work or does fate have other plans?

Without the citizenship of the Federation, Indy pilot Selina Codecko is treated like a second-class citizen. When she gets caught up in a bar brawl she’s arrested and finds herself in the hands of the Justice Officers.

Renjiro Ito has dreamed of Selina for five long years. As the Commander of the Justice Officers, the plight of this one woman will turn his life upside down.

But there’s more going on than just the fate of one woman—there’s a seething underbelly that wants to destroy their newly expanded Federation. The chances of a future together are slim, but they’ll take any chances that come their way. Will it be enough?

SORM excerpt

“Sit down.” Renjiro’s terse words filled Selina with pain and sadness.

She acceded to his request in silence, holding her throbbing hand against her breast. He squatted before her, his face close to hers, his dark eyes shadowed. His touch was gentle as his fingers traced the line of her jaw. They shook a little and she felt the glancing caress. It warmed her.

He touched a raw spot on her chin and she hissed involuntarily.

“Where else are you injured?”

Selina shook her head.

“Captain Codecko? Selina?”

His gentle words nearly undid her. Tears burned in her eyes and she blinked, hoping to banish them. It didn’t work though. They dripped down her face, scalding her frozen cheeks.

Now his hands dropped to her shoulders. “Where else are you hurt, Selina?” His gaze was hypnotic. It drew her words without thought.

“My hand, ribs, and the top of my head.”

He frowned and started tugging at her shirt, pulling it free of the loose-fitting pants.

“What… What are you doing?”

He glanced at her, his face taut and strained. “I’m checking your injuries.”

Selina blushed, the heat creeping over her face as she pushed at his hands. “No! You can’t do that!”

“Just bloody watch me.” His rough words surprised her and her hands dropped away. He continued his almost feverish work at her buttons and very quickly he had the shirt open. Selina thanked whatever had made her fasten a bra over her very tiny breasts. With gentle movements, he brushed the old material of her shirt to one side. He hissed through clenched teeth at what he saw. “You need a medic.”

“I’m fine. I’ve lived through this before. Of greater concern to me is whether I’m going to be charged for causing the riot. I was just—”

“I know. Having a quiet drink. We checked the spy eyes. You will be free to go, so long as we can put together a suitable argument. But I have a proposition. One that would help you, I think.”

In her experience, propositions never ended well, but she was desperate enough to listen to what he had to say. So she watched in mute silence as he rose. He backed away as she quickly refastened her shirt. Then he paced to the end of the room and back.

“I’ve just received a communiqué that there’s some Indies about to plan an attack on this moon base. I need people I can trust to get information for me.”

She waited. But as he started pacing again, it seemed she would need to ask the question. “What’s in it for me?”

He stilled.

Selina held her breath. Waiting.

“I might be able to swing an official citizenship for you.”

Just like that, he could brush away all the difficulties she had faced since the end of the war. But trusting people didn’t come easily. Not for her. “You can just click your fingers and make that happen?”

He faced her again. His eyes shone almost feverishly bright under the lighting of the room. “No. But I know someone who might be able to make it happen, if you agree.”

“Why? Why would you help me?”

He smiled. “Because I owe you.”

Intimate Strangers by Tara Mills

February 25, 2014 2014, Uncategorized, Upcoming Tour 0

SOR Intimate Strangers VBT Banner

Can she ever forgive herself? Will she ever forget him? When newly engaged couple, Mac and Kate take a celebratory fishing trip off the island of Pelican Cay, they never dream their romantic bliss is in jeopardy.

What happens will test Kate in ways she never saw coming, make her question what she understands about her own heart, and lead her into the arms of another man.

SORM excerpt
There was a spring in Kate and Mac’s steps when they hustled down the dock, clasped hands swinging between them on this bright and early morning. In truth, it could have been simply the give of the walkway under their feet, but she chose to attribute it to their blissful mood. Her skin still tingled from making love with him back at the hotel. Both wore smiles that wouldn’t quit.

Kate turned her wrist, and his, to admire her beautiful new ring. The breathtaking diamond caught the light and shimmered back at her, utterly captivating her all over again.

Mac shot her a quick glance and chuckled as he gently tugged her along. “Come on. You’ll have all kinds of time to stare at that rock once we’re on the boat.”

“I can’t help it.” She laughed, still thrown by his unexpected proposal. “I love it!”

He turned her hand so he could admire the ring himself then winked at her. “It looks good on you.” Mac craned his neck and spotted their chartered boat. “I see ‘em.” He shared a nod with a man watching them from a fly bridge just ahead.

The man chuckled as he made his way down a chrome ladder to the deck to meet them. “You beat my other crewman.” Turning, he reached for Kate’s hand, hauling her into the boat as Mac boosted her by the hips from behind. Her fiancé leaped gracefully onto the boat after her, and they both faced the captain.

“Welcome aboard the Sea Sprite. I’m Brady Finn.” Still holding her hand, he gave it a hearty pump.

He didn’t look any older than they were, but his sharp features were weathered from the wind and sun. The lines framing his smile gave his tan even more warmth. Her eyes strayed to his sandy hair. Generally, she preferred men who were more clean-cut, like Mac. But the way Brady’s shaggy hair fluttered and feathered in the breeze, with the sun glinting off his natural bleached highlights, was undeniably appealing. As if saving the best for last, only now did she meet his unusual blue-green eyes. Set off by fine lines radiating out from the corner of each, they were beautiful, so striking she was thrown for moment.

No question—most women would find Brady Finn attractive. Trying very hard not to think about it, she blushed at her delayed response to his introduction. “Kate.”

As always, Mac saved the day. Offering his hand to their skipper next, he grinned. “And I’m Mac Schafer.” He glanced around, taking it all in. “Wow, this is some boat.”

“Thank you.” The captain was noticeably pleased at the compliment. “Ah … here’s Rome. He’s going to help you haul in your monster fish today.”

“Rome?” Kate raised her eyebrows as she shook the Latino’s hand.

His lips tightened. “I prefer it to Romeo.”

Brady gave him a good-natured cuff on the arm and told the passengers, “He’s not as big a fan of Shakespeare as his mom.”

Chuckling, Mac clasped hands with him and brought back the man’s easy smile. “Good to meet you, Rome.”

A sigh of contentment escaped Kate as she gazed at her fiancé. Mac had a way with people, a gift for diffusing tense situations. It’s what attracted her to him in the first place.

Stepping back, she was startled to catch the captain watching her, studying her. She had an uneasy suspicion he was very aware of how carefully she’d examined him moments ago. Looking evasively away, she reached for Mac. Pressed against his side while he chatted, Kate rubbed her hand up and down his spine, in dire need of a little of his calming mojo herself all of a sudden.

Oblivious to her tension, Mac smiled at Brady. “You said there’s a bathroom on board?”

The captain pointed to his left. “Through the salon and down the stairs.”

Mac gave Kate’s waist an affectionate squeeze. “See. Told you. You’ll be fine.”

“You can’t miss it.” Brady’s gaze landed on her again. To her relief, he didn’t linger this time. “We’ll head out as soon as Manuel gets here. Excuse me. I’ll see what’s keeping him.”

Rome waved the couple into the cockpit. “How about a quick tour?”

ABOUT THAThere was a spring in Kate and Mac’s steps when they hustled down the dock, clasped hands swinging between them on this bright and early morning.

SORM excerpt

I stood, with the help of my crutch, and walked over to the closed door. I opened it to find Jenna on the other side. “Sorry, I just needed some quiet time.”

Jenna smiled. “I don’t think there is such a thing as quite time in the Welsh household.”

“Come on in,” I offered, moving aside to make room for her to enter.

Jenna stepped into the bathroom, her heels clicking on the tile floor. She shut the door behind her, leaned against it and closed her eyes. She was dressed in a red velvet sleeveless dress and black stockings, her long blonde hair gently falling over her shoulders. Jenna was pretty and always had an available posse of boys who followed her around. She frequently dated, but was never serious with any one guy. That probably had something to do with the fact that she had three big brothers who would beat the crap out of anyone who tried to take advantage of her.

“You’re right. It is quiet. That’s a nice change of pace,” she sighed, opening her eyes to meet my gaze. Jenna took a few more steps towards me. Soon we were inches apart. Her gaze never left mine. Her hazel eyes held promise. Then she wet her lips with her tongue and leaned in to kiss me.

I was taken aback by the action—my lips unmoving, my eyes wide open, watching her kiss me. It was unbelievable to comprehend any girl would want to kiss ‘Jake the cripple,’ but Jenna was kissing me. I felt the tip of her tongue dart into my mouth and I moaned. I dropped my crutch, the aluminum clanging as it hit the floor, and wrapped my arms around her waist. Closing my eyes, I let go and kissed her back. Her mouth was sweet and supple, warm and wet.

When we finally pulled apart, we were gasping for air, Jenna’s hands on my shoulders, her forehead resting on my chin. “I always wondered what it be like to kiss you, Jake. Damn, that was amazing.” She looked up at me through her thick black eyelashes and smiled. “Where did you learn to kiss like that?”

I shrugged, feeling my cheeks grow red. “I don’t know. You’re the first girl I ever kissed.”

“I think we should try that again,” she said, leaning in for another kiss.

We kissed with more feeling. Jenna’s hands caressed my neck, then her fingers tangled in my hair. I tried to pull back, afraid she would feel my growing arousal. This was all brand new to me. I’d never imagined any girl would be interested in me and assumed I’d live my life alone, without physical connection. Yet, here was pretty Jenna—gorgeous Jenna—making the moves on me!

When we came up for air, I gently brushed a stray strand of her hair behind her ear, touched her swollen lips with the pad of my thumb. “Why me?”

“Why not? You’ve been a permanent fixture in the household for six years. I’ve had a crush on you forever, Jake.”

“I had no idea,” I stuttered. I had no clue why Jenna was attracted to me, but I seized the moment and asked, “Will you go out with me, on a real date?”

“Compared to a fake date?” she asked with confusion.

“No, I mean, you won’t be embarrassed be to seen with me in public?”

“Why would I be embarrassed?” I motioned to my bum leg, but didn’t say a thing.

“Jake, I don’t care about your leg. I care about you. I would be honored to go on a real date with you.”

I smiled, so happy in the moment that I forgot one major detail. “Oh, shit. Your brothers are going to kill me when they find out.”

Jenna simply laughed. “Seriously, you’re a part of this family. They love you like a brother.”

“That makes you my sister and that just sounds perverted.”

“John and Jason will be heading back to college and Rick doesn’t need to know.”

I thought about it for a second. That was all I needed to make up my mind. “Pick you up at seven tomorrow?”

“Perfect,” she replied, leaning in for one last kiss. “I’ll go out first. Meet you downstairs.” Jenna opened the door and peeked outside into the hall to make sure the coast was clear. She looked over her shoulder and said, “Merry Christmas, Jake.”

Player by Laura DeLuca

February 16, 2014 Upcoming Tour 0

Genre: YA
Joshua Handover had it all. He was handsome, rich, athletic, and had always been popular with the ladies. Yet, until he gets paired up with his beautiful but shy lab partner, Rosa, he never allowed himself to fall in love. As the chemistry between them grows, Josh realizes that his player days have come to end. But it seems his change of heart has come too late. Not only is Rosa leery of his bad boy reputation, he has four vindictive ex-girlfriends who are on a rampage. At first he doesn’t take their threats seriously, but then his tires are slashed, someone tries to poison him, and one of the girls turns up dead. Josh doesn’t know who to trust, but one thing is certain. It definitely isn’t worth the price he’s paying to be a player.

Someone else came over to offer Nadine their congratulations, so Josh said goodbye and went to his locker to get his backpack. He figured he would meet up with Andrea and Rosa in the parking lot. He fumbled with the combination before finally getting the door to swing open. Something glittered on the top shelf and caught his eye. He reached for it, and a small scrap of paper fluttered to the floor.

At first he wasn’t sure what he was holding. It was a pink plastic tiara with some big gaudy plastic jewels. It was the type of thing he had seen in dollar stores for little girls’ birthday parties. It was practically broken in half, and the edges were sharp. Josh pricked his finger on the jagged point, and a few drops of blood welled from the small wound. He put his finger in his mouth as he bent to pick up the paper that had fallen. When he read it, the broken crown suddenly made sense and he wondered how he could have been so naïve. He should have realized from the instant he saw it what it meant.

“Josh decided to play around
Now one of his girls is under the ground.
Another has a big bump on her head.
And by the end of the dance, the queen will be dead.”

Morrigan by Laura DeLuca

February 16, 2014 Upcoming Tour 2

SOR Morrigan VBT BannerGenre: YA
Shuffled from place to place in the foster system, Morrigan doesn’t know the meaning of home. Plus, she is different. She has power over fire, the ability to move objects with her mind, and glimpse into the future. Just when she believes her life can’t get any stranger, she discovers her true identity.

Filtiarn, a knight with a dark past and a surprising secret, has been tasked with guiding the heir of Tír Na NÓg through countless perils to be returned to her family. Once Morrigan has been reunited with her mother and grandmother, their triad can save the forgotten land of magic from being devoured by an ancient evil.

Morrigan took out a white candle and a stick of dragon blood incense, and set them up in the corner of the room. She sat cross-legged, and leaned forward to light them. No matches were necessary. No lighter either. She simply touched her finger to the end of the wick, and with an iridescent spark, the candle flickered to life. It shone at first with a bright blue flame that gradually settled into a more normal orange. It was the same with the incense—another reason why she preferred not to have an audience.

She stared into the candle for a moment, and took a few deep breaths to clear her mind of all thoughts but those of the magic she intended to perform. Danu and Dagda sat on either side of her, instantly falling into silence, as though they knew she needed her complete concentration. Their energy beside her only seemed to add to the growing sense of power that charged the room.

Morrigan closed her eyes and began to shuffle the cards. As she did, she allowed her breathing to become more even. A silence filled the room as the rest of the mortal world fell away. Soon the only sound she heard was the light thump of her own heartbeat, echoed by the quicker, fast paced beat of the cats’ hearts. She wasn’t sure how much time passed as the cards slipped through her fingers. It might have been minutes. It might have been hours. When she allowed herself to fall into a trance, time became insubstantial, irrelevant.

The tarot cards were so old; the designs on the back were almost completely worn away. She had to shuffle gently to keep them from crumbling to pieces in her hands. Yet they held a power that she knew no newer cards could offer her. As she shuffled them, she focused her energy into them, silently requesting to be given the answers she was seeking. She allowed the image of her mother to fill her mind. When she finally felt the cards had fallen into the order they were meant to be in, she placed the deck face down on the floor, and cut them with her right hand. Then, taking one last, calming breath, she lifted the top card from the pile. With a trembling hand, she laid it down and read it.

“Wheel of Fortune,” she said aloud.

In the center of card was a wheel. As she stared at the picture, that wheel seemed to turn clockwise. The movements made her feel slightly dizzy. The bedroom around her became more and more surreal. The scene on the card became her reality. The figure of the sphinx that sat on top of the turning wheel looked so very real. It might have turned its head to look at her. Its lips may or may not have moved. Morrigan swore she heard a deep, resonating voice whispering the meaning of the card into her ear. Destiny approaching. An unexpected and sudden change was coming—change that could lead to good fortune.

It was the card of fate and karma returned. It meant that she needed to be prepared—to expect the unexpected. Morrigan knew the cards were telling her something was going to happen—and soon. Her destiny, whatever it was, was about to be realized. Even if it did bring fortune, it still scared her to death. She considered packing up the cards right then and there. Her rational mind had every intention of doing just that. Her hands didn’t get the message her brain was sending. Before she knew what she was doing, she had already flipped over the second card.

“The Empress,” she whispered. She exhaled deeply. “My mother.”

It was the only interpretation imaginable. Even as she said it, the pregnant woman, crowned with stars and adorned in a gown decorated with pomegranates, turned to her and smiled. She was no longer a vague featureless stranger, but the same woman Morrigan had sketched earlier that day—a face that mirrored her own. It was an older version of herself, which she saw in the reflection in the nearby full length mirror, had turned chalk white.

The Empress was a symbol of maternal power—of strong feminine influence. But could it mean that her mother was returning? She had never allowed herself to consider such a possibility. To dwell on something so unlikely would have been too painful. But now, with just the flip of a card, she found herself daring to dream. There was only one way to find out for sure. She had to keep going with the reading.

“Six of Cups.”

The third card in the spread represented her past, and even her immediate present. The six of cups specifically symbolized childhood, and she was, technically, still a child. But she had a feeling that her childhood was about to end quite abruptly. The cups in the picture were lined up across a high stone wall, each cup holding the memories of her past.

Her past. It was nothing but a childhood filled with longing—longings which were perhaps about to be fulfilled. She visualized herself taking each cup down from the wall, and pouring the troubling memories away. It was time to start fresh. A new world was about to open up for her. She had known it as soon as she had seen the image of her mother’s face. But what would that world be like? What was waiting for her in the future?

Morrigan turned over the fourth card.

“The Knight of Wands.”

The man on the horse carrying the staff had her baffled. Not because she didn’t know its normal meaning, but because as she stared at the card, it began to take on the physical attributes of the knight in her drawings. He had the same long dreadlocks, the same bewitching stare, even the same cocky smile. The familiarity did not cancel out the meaning of the card. The knight of wands was representative of a dark man filled with a kind of honey-tongued charm. He was also fiery and arrogant, a man with a definite possibility of a dark side. If the knight of wands was coming into her life, she knew she needed to proceed with caution.

She thought she was done with the fourth card, and was preparing to move on to the next, when once again, she found she had lost control of her body. This time, her hands refused to move, while her eyes forced their way back to the knight in the card. She watched as the long haired stranger began to move forward—wandering over various landscapes, some high mountains, some meadows and fields ripe for the harvest. He kept looking back over his shoulder, as though he were speaking to someone. He was on a journey, and he wasn’t alone. Morrigan didn’t need to see his companion to know who it must be.

So, her journey would soon begin, and she wouldn’t be traveling alone. She would have a guide. Whether or not that would be a good thing was another question best left to the cards to answer. The next card told her nothing she didn’t already know.

“The Moon,” she said. “Caution.”

It was a scary card. It warned of tricks and illusions. The two howling wolves that stood under the moon looked back at her menacingly, growling, showing their pointed fangs in a snarl. For the first time since she began the reading, Danu and Dagda made their presence known by lifting their heads and hissing threateningly in the direction of the beasts.

Even the cats sensed it. The journey she was about to embark on wouldn’t be all fun and family reunions. There would be obstacles and deceit, most likely from people she thought could be trusted. The moon was a sign that danger was certainly awaiting her. In was an ominous omen.

“Shhhh.”

She hushed the hissing cats, and gave them each a gentle stroke to try to settle them down, though she was far from settled herself. Again she felt the urge to stop the spread. Her instincts were telling her that no good was going to come out of this reading. She was only going to scare herself. She should never have done it in the first place. When would she learn that sometimes it was best to let life play out without interference or prophetic warnings? Then again, she knew that to be forewarned might be her only advantage. So with more bravery than she felt, Morrigan flipped over the final card.

“No . . . .” she gasped when she looked down at the terrible, skeletal face. “Oh no.”

She should have known. She thought a part of her did know even before she glanced down at the gruesome scene—a skeleton with a scythe in a field of body parts. With the divination going in the direction it was, what else could be the final outcome?

“Death,” she whispered. “Death.”

She knew that in most cases, the death card was a symbol of personal transformation rather than literal death. But a deeper sense of understanding told her that this time the card was meant to be taken literally. She saw only glimpses and shadows in her mind. Brief flashes of faces, some familiar, like her mother and the knight—some still strangers, like a beautiful, almost angelic blonde woman in a flowing white gown. But around them all, including herself, she saw the shadows of death.

Morrigan felt decidedly shaky as she gathered up her tarot cards. She placed them securely in the bottom of her bag just as she heard the door downstairs slam shut. The reading hadn’t made everything as crystal clear as she had hoped, but one thing was certain. Her whole life was about to change.

Destiny by Laura DeLuca

February 16, 2014 Upcoming Tour 0

SOR Destiny VBT Banner

Genre: YA

Gabriella is a witch. The problem is, she doesn’t remember. She repressed the memories of her powers years ago when her mother was murdered. Now, the warlock who was responsible for her mother’s death has set his sights on Gabriella. He is determined to use her fear to turn her to the dark side of magick…even if it kills her. Her mother’s spirit is reaching out to warn her, but even that she pushes away. Desperate to save her daughter, the spirit finds a male witch–one that just happens to be in love with Gabriella. Darron is more than willing to help but the two young witches will have way more to battle than just an evil warlock. There are overbearing jocks and petty rich girls who get tempers flaring and often set Gabrielle and Darron at odds.

There is more to the story than Gabrielle and Darron could even imagine. There are terrible secrets to be revealed, battles to be waged, and lives will be lost. Only after Gabrielle and Darron both come to terms with who they really are, and open themselves up to the true meaning of magick, can they have any hope of fulfilling their destiny.

Her eyes scanned the room, from the pale blue sofa to the bloody dent in the wall. But she didn’t need her eyes to know Darron was there. Her heart sensed his presence before her eyes saw him lying in a heap on the ground. His body shuttered with occasional spasms, and even though he wasn’t fully conscious, his lips were twisted in a grimace of pain.

Uttering a gasp of surprise, Gabriella flew to his side. She knelt beside him, and choked back a sob as she took his hand in her own. She saw his chest rise and fall and was glad to know was alive, but she felt helpless as she watched his face contort in pain. She noticed something wet and sticky on her fingertips. She gently titled his head and saw a large gash that looked like it needed medical attention. The skin around the gash was so deeply bruised it looked almost black.

“Darron, what happened to you?”

He didn’t move or reply. Gabriella moved her hand from the cut on his forehead, and her fingers dripped with blood. She bit her lower lip with fear. She knew enough about head injuries to know that the wound could be serious. She grabbed a few tissues from a box on the coffee table, and tried to apply pressure to the wound, but it was useless. The tissues were soaked through in seconds.

“Darron?” She squeezed his hand, and fought back tears of fear and frustration. “Darron, please open your eyes. Please be all right!”

He squirmed and groaned a little in response. Looking at his contorted features, Gabriella felt incompetent and useless. She didn’t know what to do to help him. The cut must need stitches. The blood was gushing through her fingertips, and she was sure his life was slipping away just as quickly.

More than anything, Gabriella wanted to help Darron, to end his suffering. Her thoughts, her desperation, caused something deep inside of her to stir. Something that had long been napping was awoken. The power she had fought so hard to deny was forcing its way to the surface. This time she didn’t struggle against that power. Her instinct to hide from it was finally overcome by the thought of losing someone else she cared about.

Gabriella was pulling strength and warmth from the earth, as though her legs were tree roots taking nourishment from the element. A tingling sensation began in the tips of her toes and spread slowly though her body as she breathed in the essence of the element of air. Her blood flowed and grew warm, the element of water, bringing the power to the surface. She was overcome by a vigorous strength as she envisioned her spirit encircled by the element of fire. She felt so powerful that she thought she could stop the world from churning if that was what she wished. Gabriella focused the power, remembering for a moment her mother’s lessons. She looked down at her battered friend. She willed him to open his eyes and look at her. She demanded it of him.

Gabriella would have thought it was impossible, but she felt herself grow warmer. Her face dripped with perspiration. The power within her reached a climax. Then finally, when she thought she might burst, she felt the energy release. It seeped through her fingers, and shined with an illumination that only she could see. She heard herself chanting unfamiliar words, and scarcely recognized her own voice.

“By the power of earth, water, fire and air,
Heal this man who’s in my care.
Goddess, hear your daughter’s plea.
As I will it, so mote it be!”

Gabriella repeated the words three times. Three was the number of power. Then she watched as the wound on Darron’s forehead healed before her eyes, becoming smaller and smaller, until finally it was gone. The blood was still warm and sticky, but beneath the blood, the skin was smooth and unmarred. Even the horrible bruise had vanished. Gabriella stared in open astonishment, marveling at the work she had done.
