Genre: Sports Romance
Is it true that love overcomes all?
He was one of the star goalies on the Renegades, best buddies with Dom Zanetti – also a goalie, he was carefree and always smiling.
She was Hailee’s best friend, an ice skating instructor in her spare time and owner of a pet salon. She worked hard for what she wanted, she earned her own way in life.
Kaden O’Conner and Alison Bishop met by chance when Dom was still trying to woo Hailee back. They’ve been hot and heavy ever since. Exclusive without ever actually saying they were exclusive, but every second of their romance was pure fun. Kaden was never a one-woman kind of guy, but there was something about being with Ali that had him sure he didn’t want anyone else.
Reality catches up with them and drops a bombshell in their lap. Ali chooses to handle it with poise and grace, or like a boss, as she says. Kaden doesn’t. On the heels of their lives being turned upside down, Kaden’s life takes another hit, and it inadvertently becomes his major focus.
After everything working to keep them apart, were they still meant to be together? Can they reconcile and deal with their life changing issue as a couple?
“Kaden grabbed his hockey bag and stick, then paused at the door to wait for his goal-tending partner, Dom, before leaving the locker room. Tyler and Kris trailed behind them. “Hey, O’Conner. Seems like the family men are outnumbering you. When are you going to nail down that special lady?” Team captain, Tyler Kidd called out with a chuckle.
Tyler was married to the Renegades PR assistant, Paige. Kris was married, and Kris’s cousin, Patrick, was married now as well. Dom was the next in line to the altar, but everyone saw that coming.
Kaden waved his teammates off. “I’m good for now, thanks. You guys can take care of being the family men.”
“Don’t worry too much about Kaden, his focus is all on Ali.” Dom patted Kaden on his shoulder. “I got your back, bro.”
“No more bunnies, K-man?” Luc called out, receiving a glare and elbow to the gut from Harrison who made the same mistake during practice.
“Nope.” Why did these guys think they needed an explanation from him about his love life?
“We all know Kaden isn’t the marrying kind. Or is he?” Patrick innocently teased with the infamous rumor.
Kaden was tired and this was annoying. “Who said anything about marrying? I’m with Ali and I’m good with that. It’s fun. She’s fun. We’re having fun. I don’t need bunnies and she knows that she’s my girl, so it’s all good.” It’s not that he didn’t want to get married ever. And it’s not like he hadn’t thought about it with Ali. He would know when it was time, and this wasn’t it. Not yet.
“She knows. Is that all you can say? You know how things went down with Hailee. You need to communicate with them. What about those girls in New York that are always waiting for you? You know, the ones that are plastered all over social media with you. You done with them for good?” Dom asked, poking the bear on purpose, obviously trying to prove a point.
“Damn… You too Z? Yes. Ali is all that I need. She knows we’re together. She knows she’s mine. And she doesn’t need some big declaration from me.” His head was pounding and he just wanted to grab some grub and then text Ali. She had a busy day today, so he was going home to sleep and get some work done. But all of their comments were starting to get to him. His ears were starting to burn and his temper was rising.
“Kaden, girls need to know that they’re yours, man. They don’t just assume that it’s all good. Especially when there’s misleading social media photos out there. And in our line of work, it’s all out there.” Kris commented from experience. “Take it from me, even if you think she knows, don’t leave her hanging.”
“I think she wants to hear the word, Kaden.” Dom pressured.
“You haven’t said the word yet? How long have you guys been together?” Kris was now scowling a bit. He knew better than anyone how wrong things could go, so his advice was worth considering.
“Since I was trying to get Hailee back. Remember the charity skate over at the outside rink?” Dom interjected.
“Yeah.” Kris shook his head, recalling that night. “Wow. She’s being patient with you. That’s been long enough. Kat would’ve been losing her mind by now.”
“And maybe even secretly meeting with me. The hot young player with the wicked tattoos.” Dom winked. “Oh, that’s right, she was.”
“Why do you always have to bring that shit up?” Kris shoved Dom playfully. “Damn, dude. Let it go.”
“Seriously guys, you think that she really needs to hear me say it? Cause I am really into her, but…” How do I know when it’s time to say it?
“She’s the only girl you want to be with, right?” Dom asked.
“And you think about her all of the time?” Tyler joined in with his two cents.
“And you don’t want her seeing anyone else?” Kris added.
Yes, to all of those things. Was I wrong not telling her my feelings? But never saying those three little words, the thought of it made him nauseous. What if I said it, then did something stupid to screw it all up? “Of course she’s the only one I want and I don’t want her with anyone else. I just don’t know… I just don’t think that we’re there yet. Things are good and we’re happy. Why mess with a good thing?” Was he wrong?
