Genre: Historical Romance

Lady Amelia has only known the comfort of life in mid-eighteenth century English aristocracy. But when first her mother and then her father die, she finds herself alone, grief stricken and….. not of age. Her appointed guardian, an American uncle, has ordered her travel to his plantation where she must remain for at least two years when she will come of age.
With the help of Lady Grace and Lady Sarah, Lady Amelia gets her uncle to agree to give her four weeks to settle her affairs and unbeknownst to him…find an English lord to marry so she can remain in her beloved England. Despite her mourning period she endeavors to trap one of London’s eligible bachelors in matrimony.
Lord Goldstone, Lady Grace’s nephew is devilishly handsome, but a Scottish Duke and so entirely unacceptable as a possible husband. After all Scotland is not her beloved London and environs. He also has a nasty habit of showing up at all the wrong moments and thwarting her carefully laid plans to ensnare a suitable husband. Sparks fly as the pair find themselves at odds with each other and drawn to each other at the same time. Can they find a way to stop arguing long enough to explore their growing passion? Is it strong enough to make Lady Amelia give up her English home after all? Or will Lady Amelia find a suitable English lord and avoid social exile in America? Time is running out.

SORM excerpt

Lord Roseington wrapped his arms around her and stood up, setting her on her feet. “Yes, Amelia, everything is okay now.” He reached up and removed her arms from around him, then took a step back. “We must stop winding up in these situations before we cause a scandal.”

She looked at him through hooded eyes. “‘Tis a wonder we haven’t already.”

A man cleared his voice behind her.

Amelia turned her head, already knowing who had caught them. “Lord Goldstone, you mustn’t trouble yourself with keeping our secret.”

“What she means to say is that there is no secret to be kept. Amelia carelessly got close enough to the hearth to catch her skirts ablaze. I could not very well let her burn up.”

“No, Roseington, you were obliged to help. I am glad to know that you were not taking advantage of our dear Amelia.” He glanced at her and flashed a rakish smirk. “Indeed, you are a hero. Let us go share the story while Amelia changes her charred gown.”

She tried her hardest to shoot daggers at him from her narrowed glare. His grin only deepened at the attempt, which increased her ire. “Don’t you dare tell a soul. I would most definitely perish from the embarrassment!” Amelia spat the words out with anger and annoyance. How dare he ruin everything for a second time, and then jest about sharing her humiliation. If he were not Scottish, she would trap him instead. That would teach him a lesson.

“Do not worry your head over it, Lady Amelia. We will not breathe a word of this little mishap,” Lord Roseington said. “Right, Goldstone?”

“Of course not. All of your secrets are safe with me.” He winked.

Amelia blushed at what he had implied. “Thank you. Now that it is settled I am going to retire for the evening. Enjoy the rest of the party. Lord Roseington, Lord Goldstone.” She inclined her head to them before spinning on her heels and speeding from the room.

SORM excerpt

“I have a question I’d like to ask you.”

“Sure. What do you want to know?”

“How do you like to be seduced?”

Her startled reaction was rewarding. “What?”

“I think I was clear about my request. How do you like to be …?”

“Why are you asking?”

“Because I want to get it right. There are a lot of ways to seduce a woman and …”

“And you know them all?” The tone of her voice was amused even though he’d been going for excited.

“No, but it’s much more enjoyable when both parties agree on what they like.” He traced a line over her collarbone with his forefinger. “For example, I like the feel of your skin. Do you like to be seduced with touch?” His finger moved from her collarbone down to the top of her breast. “Like this?”

Her sharp intake of breath was all he needed to continue his explorations. With the softest of touches, he moved from her chest, up her neck to her chin then to the curve of her ear and the soft lobe. He could see her nipples peaking through the drape of her dress.

“Or shall I tell you how soft your skin is? Seduce you with words. By saying how much I want to touch your breasts the way I’m touching your ear. How much I want to see if your thighs are as soft and smooth as …”

“Dominic, please.”

“Please, what, cara?’

“Please … I don’t … I don’t know.” She moved restlessly in her seat, tried to put space between them, but he wouldn’t let her. “Don’t tease me like this.”

“I’m not teasing. I’m doing research for later.” He kissed her temple. “How about seduction by kissing?” He began to give her light, butterfly kisses from her temple to her cheek, to her ear and her neck. His hand moved across the span of her waist, and he pulled her against him, her back to his chest. With the other hand he moved her hair to one side so he could nibble at her neck and shoulder. He knew from the way she was breathing, from the way her head was thrown back, he’d achieved his goal. She was excited.

Then the lights went down and the orchestra began to play the overture.

SORM About the Author
Born in Philadelphia, I’ve spent most of my adult life in the Pacific Northwest where I have happily grown webs between my toes and moss behind my ears. Over my adult life, I pursued a number of careers—nurse, legislative staffer, lobbyist, public affairs consultant, non-profit association executive, workshop teacher, oh, and mother and wife—before deciding to leave it all for what I’ve loved through every stage of life—writing.

As much as I wanted to be a writer, if someone had told me I’d spend my sixties writing romances, I’d have laughed. I was sure I’d be writing intricately plotted mysteries and deeply moving memoir pieces. But the characters in every piece of fiction I started wanted their love stories told in spite of the fact I had many of them hanging around questionable people or involved in murder, intrigue and general mayhem.

That’s how the Second Chances romance series was born. Six books in the series have been released by Crimson Romance as ebooks and trade paperbacks, all set in some of my favorite places—Portland, Oregon, the Puget Sound, Philadelphia. My second series, A Holiday For Romance, now includes four books with a fifth to be released in June of 2015.

Still no mysteries but I’m working on it. I’m working on it.

Love Refocused by Nancy Corrigan

SOR Love Refocused VBT BannerGenre: Contemporary Romance

Series: Sander’s Valley,  Book 2

Wyn Sander is surprised when his brother Kyle asks him to be best man at his wedding. Wyn’s even more shocked to learn the woman who later walks into his garage is Ronnie’s half-sister, Iona. He’s instantly attracted to her. She’s sophisticated, beautiful, and confident. At least she is until Wyn stands up. She flinches and a look of terror passes over her face. It bothers him to see. Luckily, desire replaces it, but it doesn’t stop Wyn’s curiosity. For the first time in his life, he wants to find out what made Iona fearful and fix it.

Iona can’t believe her luck. The man she lusts after is her new sister’s soon to be brother-in-law. The kiss they share shatters her, but her attempt to stop any involvement with him ends up with her agreeing to three dates. She decides Wyn is unlike any man she’s ever known, and it’s unfortunate she can’t enjoy him. She isn’t in the market for a boyfriend. All she wants is sex. The only problem is—she doesn’t think Wyn sees things her way.

SORM excerpt
Wyn tapped out a rhythm on the hood of his ’57 classic truck. The noise drowned out his brother Kyle as he talked and talked and talked some more. Wyn had listened until the word “wedding” came up. It had killed his attention span, not that he had much of one. Probably why he was the only Sander who hadn’t gone to college. Hell, he’d barely made it through high school.

“If you don’t want the job, I’ll ask someone else,” Kyle snapped.

Wyn forced his fingers to still and glanced at Kyle. “What job?”

Kyle closed his eyes on a sigh. “Best man.”

“Me? What about Neil?” Wyn had thought Kyle’s best friend would’ve held the honor. Kyle and Ronnie had pushed their wedding date back specifically until Neil’s deployment in whatever third-world country he’d been stationed ended. A chilling thought surfaced. “He didn’t get hurt, did he?”

“No. He opted to stay longer. He’s not sure when he’ll be home.” Kyle rubbed the back of his neck. “And well, Ronnie and I don’t want to wait any longer.”

“Why not? You two are already living together. It’s not like it matters if you’re husband and wife.”

Ronnie had moved in a couple of months ago while she recovered from a gunshot wound. She’d been lucky the shooter’s aim was off. A couple of inches lower and Kyle would’ve lost the love of his life.

“It’ll matter to Mom,” Kyle said.

Wyn crossed his arms and studied his brother, an older and rougher version of himself. Kyle fidgeted, and a tinge of red stained his cheeks. There weren’t many things that would make him nervous, except a stern lecture from their mama. Eliza Sander was a force to be reckoned with. Wyn went over the possible reasons and chuckled.

“You got Ronnie knocked up, didn’t you?”

A grin spread over Kyle’s face. “First month we were trying too. We thought it’d take longer.”

“Congrats, man.” Wyn smacked Kyle’s back. “That’s great news.”

“Yeah, it is, but we’re not making it common knowledge yet. Ronnie wants to wait until we hear the heartbeat.” Kyle dropped his gaze to the floor. “You know, just in case.”

Wyn tensed. “Do you suspect something’s wrong?”

“No, but I’d hate to get Mom’s hope up, then break it. Besides, you remember how adamant she was about us not having kids out of wedlock. I refuse to be the one who breaks her rule.”

Wyn shrugged. “I think she’d make an exception. She loves Ronnie.”

“Probably, but it doesn’t matter. We’ve set the date for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.”

“That’s as good a time as any. At least you won’t forget your anniversary.”

“Yeah.” Kyle crossed his arms over his chest. Silence stretched. Finally he sighed. “So are you going to take the job or not?”

Best man, right. “Of course.”

Kyle blew out a rough breath. “Great. I didn’t want to have to pick between Jack and Levi.”

Wyn didn’t blame him. As twins, Jack and Levi were close and always had each other’s back, but they argued constantly.

“What do I need to do, other than plan the bachelor party?”

“I’ll get you a list, but the good news is you don’t have to worry about a date. You’ll be seated with Ronnie’s sister.”

Thank goodness. He’d been debating which ex-lover to bring. “Iona, right?”

Kyle nodded. “She’ll be arriving in a few days.” He leveled a hard glare at him. “Be nice to her, okay?”

Wyn held up a hand. “Hey, I’m always nice to women. I just tend to lose interest before they do.”

“Iona’s had a rough time of it. Her—” Kyle’s phone buzzed. He pulled it from his pocket, glanced at the display, and groaned. “Look, I’ve got to go. Ronnie’s decided to cook me dinner. I need to save my kitchen from being turned upside down.” He grimaced. “Or my house from being burned to the ground.”

To Tame a Highland Earl by Tara Scott

February 23, 2015 Uncategorized 0

Genre: Historical Romance

A man torn between two worlds. Both need him…neither wants him.

Groomed for a life amongst the English aristocracy, Lord Erroll Rushton is unexpectedly thrust back into his father’s Scottish world when the Englishwoman he compromises refuses to marry him.

No gentleman breaks into a lady’s bedchamber…but then, no lady sleeps with a pistol under her pillow.

Miss Eve Crenshaw will marry for love or won’t marry at all. When London’s most notorious rakehell breaks into her bedchamber in the dead of night and compromises her beyond repair, Eve plans a daring escape that shocks even the Earl.

SORM excerpt
Eve’s heart leapt into a furious rhythm. The hidey-hole was wide enough to accommodate Lord Rushton’s broad shoulders, and long enough for them to squeeze in together. Nothing more. Eve inhaled a breath, then stopped at his hiss of breath.

“Miss Crenshaw, I will ask you not to move,” he whispered.

Her pulse skipped a bit. “I-I do not hear anything. Maybe they did not come into the room.” Please, God, she prayed. But the moment the prayer passed from her lips, a woman squealed on the other side of the panel.

Eve gasped. Lord Rushton clamped a hand over her mouth. He bent slightly and she felt warm breath wash over her temple as he whispered, “Careful.”

She nodded—as much in a fervent plea for him to quit touching her as to indicate her understanding. His hand dropped away. A male voice murmured something in the room and Eve wanted to cry. Someone had chosen this room for an illicit interlude. How long would they stay? If she and Lord Rushton were caught, her father would personally escort them to Gretna Green for a quick marriage. But almost worse than that, the heat that radiated off Lord Rushton threatened to melt her on the spot.

The tension in her back was working its way up her shoulders. She shifted. He seized her hips. She jerked and banged her elbow against the wall. He cursed softly. Her heart hammered harder. What was wrong with her? She wasn’t an untried maiden. What she and Blane had done was far worse than being squeezed into a hiding place the size of a rabbit hole. So why did being wedged in with Lord Rushton have her ready to jump out of her skin? The man’s muffled voice was followed by a woman’s moan.

Eve became suddenly aware of the steely bulge pressing against her belly. Her legs weakened and she felt her knees give way. Lord Rushton jammed an arm behind her and caught her by her buttocks.

Lauren Ford packed up and moved to Texas to start over after her fiancé had an affair with her best friend. Her father’s retiring and has offered to let her take over his accounting firm. When she meets Tucker she’s immediately taken with him, despite his reputation as a ladies’ man. Knowing she isn’t looking for love, or even if she wants to stay in Texas, she decides to have fun with Tucker and keep her feelings at bay.

After one taste of Lauren, Tucker has other plans. Lauren is the woman he wants, but for some reason she’s resisting. And it doesn’t help when her ex-fiancé shows up in town wanting her to go back to Georgia with him. Can Tucker convince her that his feelings are true, or will he lose her forever?

Content Warning: contains adult language and explicit sexual scenes

SORM excerpt

Lauren stared at the papers in front of her, but none of it registered. All she could focus on was the half naked man. The hot, sweaty, tanned man who was now naked in his shower only feet away from her.

She shook her head and rubbed her thighs. Enough. It wasn’t like Tucker was the first sexy man she’d seen. She wasn’t blind or innocent, but something about him got her panties moist quick. Hopefully, she could make it through this accounting meeting without ripping her own clothes off and offering herself up to him. She had no doubt he would be an awesome lover. The man worked with his hands all day; surely he knew a thing or two that could please her.

Seriously, enough.

Lauren straightened her back and stared at the stack of papers he’d given her. There were receipts, printouts, and such. Tucker seemed to keep good records, so that would make things easier. She removed her computer from her bag and turned it on. After she pulled up the file for Carver Ranch, she studied it once more to familiarize herself with it.

This was a profitable ranch. Last year had been one of their roughest years, but so far, this year was already better. She was sure once she started to fill in the stuff he’d supplied her with, she’d see they’d come back strong from the previous year.

“Everything there?”

Lauren jumped in her seat.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”

Tucker, now dressed, came over and sat next to her. Whatever soap he’d used attacked her senses in a good way. How did someone get out of the shower, yet still smell like fresh cut pines?

She shouldn’t do it, but she did anyway. She let her gaze wander over his body. The black t-shirt he wore hugged his wide chest, letting her get the full view of his muscles.

Lauren looked away quickly. “Yeah, I think this is it.” She flipped through the stack. “You’re free to do whatever while I do this. I know you’ve got a lot to do.”

“Can I get you something to drink?” He stood, and her focus went straight to his crotch.

Oh God. She glanced up quick to see him smirking. The man knew he was sex on a stick with his sandy blond hair and blue eyes. “Do you have some tea?”

“Sweet?”

“Uh, yeah.”

He winked. “I’ll be back.”

“Take your time.” The farther away he was, the more she could concentrate on her work. She wasn’t sure what had come over her, but the sooner she got done with this job, the better. Then she wouldn’t have to see him again until next quarter.

Pax has more than a one-night stand on his mind, but will his bad-boy persona and demanding schedule ruin any chances of a happily ever after?

Content Warning: contains explicit sex and adult content

SORM excerpt
“Can I walk you to your car?” Pax asked.
“Thank you.” Sophia got up from the table and took his hand. “I’m parked right out front.”
He led her across the dance floor, waving to the few people who were left, and then out to the parking lot.
“It’s that one.” She pointed to her beat-up car, the one she’d bought her freshman year of college. It was used then but it still managed to get her where she needed to go. “Probably not as nice as what you drive.”
He leaned her against the car and wrapped his arms around her waist. Her heart pounded hard against her chest, strumming loud between her ears. She could smell the beer that lingered on his breath. His hazel eyes narrowed as he swiped the tip of his tongue along his top lip before tilting his head.
“I have a feeling I’m going be seeing you in my dreams tonight.”He sighed as he brought his mouth to hers. “Give me something to remember these next few days.”
She nodded as she placed her hands on his broad shoulders and guided him to her, closing any space between them. When his warm lips touched hers, she thought she would explode. A burn coursed through her and settled between her legs. The mild tingling she’d experienced when they danced was nothing compared to the intensity she felt now.
As he deepened the kiss, his tongue massaged hers. Increasing his hold on her hips, he pinned her between the car and his massive thighs. She tightened her grip on him when his erection grazed her center. Every nerve ending in her begged to be satiated. The ache inside her stomach moved lower until the dampness invaded her panties. Her nipples poked against the thin material of her silk bra.
When she moaned into his mouth, he placed one last kiss on her lips before pulling away. He looked at her for a moment, pressing his forehead to hers as he stuttered a few words.
“That was…well, I’ve never…” He ran his fingers through his hair. “You have me tongue-tied, sugar. That doesn’t happen often.”
Now she wanted to know what else he could do with that tongue.
“You best get in that car and drive away before I…”
She’d never wanted to have a one-night stand more than she did at that very moment. Maggie had said if there was ever a guy to have one with, Pax would be the one. He was a no-strings-attached player. Why hadn’t he asked her to go home with him?
“Be safe driving home.” He reached for the handle and opened her door. “You have some sweet dreams. I know I sure will.”
Sleep? That was the last thing on her mind.

An Irresistible Shadow by Kirsten S. Blacketer

February 13, 2015 Uncategorized 0

Genre: Historical Romance

Lady Evelyn Montgomery, only daughter of the Baron of Rayne, detests the thought of marriage. She will never allow a man to control her. Crushed by the constraints of propriety, she steals away from the safety of the keep and stumbles onto a plot designed to stir up trouble between England and Scotland. When a mysterious hooded man saves her, she fights her attraction to him as they join forces to hunt down a traitor and save her father. But can she save her heart?

Gabriel is a Shadow Guardian. Hiding beneath his black cowl and blending into the night, he is sworn to protect the Baron’s daughter. The spirited Lady Evelyn is far from the delicate flower he anticipated. She makes herself crystal clear, no man will possess her. Can he prove to her that love can be more than just possession? Or will the traitor they seek tear them apart forever?

SORM excerpt

Fear infused her body, Evelyn had been captured. The fear melted into anger. She thrashed in her captor’s arms, twisting and kicking. His gloved hand tightened over her mouth and the other pinned her securely against his chest.

“I mean you no harm,” a velvet voice whispered in her ear. “I don’t want to bind you, but I will.” Evelyn’s heel connected with the man’s shin. He cursed. “Although you evidently mean to harm me.” His voice was calm, suffused with amusement. He carried her to where their horses were tethered.

Evelyn struggled to free herself, but he was much stronger. She was close enough to the keep to call for help, if he would only remove his hand from her mouth. He was all warm muscle against her back, a living, breathing stone wall. His breath caressed the fine hairs on her neck. When he stopped moving, she wedged her mouth open enough to fit her teeth around one of his fingers and bit down. Hard.

“God’s blood, woman! I’m trying to help you,” he swore in his velvet whisper, then readjusted his hand over her mouth.

So much for that idea. If she had to play along with the rogue, so be it. He held no weapon to her throat. Though his hold on her was firm, he did not cause her pain. His muscles flexed as he shifted her in his grasp. She was keenly aware of every part of him that touched her. Okay, so he had a weapon against her. Though she had yet to see his face, her body betrayed her with its reaction. Evelyn inhaled in an effort to regain her composure and breathed in his scent. It was fresh, earthy, and dangerously sinful. She groaned, embarrassed by her wicked thoughts.

Her captor stilled, his breath quickening. “I will let you go,” he murmured. “If you promise to behave.” She nodded, relieved when he kept his word.

Evelyn broke from his embrace and spun on him. “Who are you?” she hissed. “What do you want?” She scrutinized the shadowed man before her. He wore all black: boots, leggings, tunic, and cloak. The hood covering his head was positioned low purposefully to hide his face from scrutiny.

The man proffered a sardonic bow, waving his arm with a flourish. “I am your humble servant, my lady.”

The humor in his voice made her wary of his intent. “How did you know I was here?”

“I followed you,” he answered.

She swallowed the lump in her throat. Following her? The words of Sir Alexander echoed in her mind. She should have taken a guard. “Why did you not make your presence known?”

“That would not have served my purpose, my lady,” he replied as he leaned against a tree, melding into the shadows. Since he seemed more amused than disturbed by her questions, she asked another.

“Why did you grab me?” she demanded, licking her dry lips. Formidable and mysterious, this man of the shadows aroused her curiosity.

“Ensuring your safety. You’re not as quiet as you think you are.”

Evelyn bristled. She was proud, unwilling to admit he was right. “Who do you think you are?” Her voice rose in pitch and fervor. “First, you follow me, then accost me, and finally insult me. You, sir, are playing a dangerous game. I should turn you over to the night watch.” She poked him in the chest. “I don’t need your help. I can take care of myself.” Evelyn turned looking for her horse.

“I can see that.”

Her characters creep forth from the dark recesses of her mind taking their places in the castles and forests built from her words. No simpering heroines linger there with forlorn gazes turned to the horizon, waiting for their Prince Charming. They straighten their spine, arming themselves with blade and bow, prepared to do their part in defense of their honor and destiny. She breathes life into the women she believes our ancestors to be, showing how they lived and loved with passion and grace.

Never bored by the tales still left to tell, she battles the ever sarcastic muse in her quest for romance.

Jeff is committed to his life as a bachelor, but his high-powered nature has finally brought him to a crossroads. He’s face-to-face with a quandary; his decisions will affect his professional and personal life forever.

Nikki’s tenacious efforts to live a dream life, while still keeping her heart shielded, are coupled with wrestling an ongoing dilemma – her heart still belongs to Sky.

But Nikki isn’t the only one who’s twisted by desire.
SORM excerpt
By Monday afternoon, after an entire weekend of mulling over intriguing thoughts of Jeff, happy hour on Friday, and the card, I was wrestling with the idea of biting the bullet and calling him. The butterflies in my stomach had me so amped up. I was a bundle of nerves, and I barely got any work done all day. I sat holding his business card in one hand and my cellphone in the other, staring at his name and the numbers, drawn into the essence of the mysterious card owner.

“Just call him already,” Georgia’s voice called over my shoulder.

“What?”

“You’ve been pulling that card out of your purse and putting it back for hours. Just call him.”

“I need to talk to you.”

“C’mon, let’s take a quick walk.”

I dropped my phone into my purse and closed the bottom drawer, pushed my chair back from the desk and stood, then rounded my desk. We walked side by side down the hallway in silence until we reached the empty break area.

“So what’s up?” Georgia said.

“I just wanted to bounce something off of you; tell me what you think.” I looked down at my hand, still holding the card tight. “After you left Friday night, Connor, the shorter of those two guys from the restaurant came over with Jeff, and he introduced himself to me.” I raised my eyes back to meet hers.

“That’s kind of forward, but whatever; it’s all good, right?”

“Yeah, that part was fine. Jeff, the taller, gorgeous one, walked over, but he didn’t introduce himself. I introduced myself to him.” With my eyebrows furrowed and shoulders hunched, I continued, “I practically threw myself at him.” My head turned toward the raised hand holding the card. “And Jeff didn’t give me this card. Connor gave it to me just before I left.”

“Introducing yourself isn’t a crime, Nikki; you’ll be okay. That’s kind of weird with the card, though. Maybe he’s shy. Does it say what he does?”

“No, it only has the company logo, his name, and phone number. It’s weird. He’s weird, and his card is weird. That’s what’s been eating at me all weekend and today. Is he even interested? Why is Connor handing out his business cards for him? What if I call and he doesn’t even remember me?”

We walked back to our department, Georgia wished me luck, and I smiled my thanks before lowering myself into my seat at my desk. I set the card down on the desk in front of me, and, with my two index fingers, slid it up toward my monitor, then back to the edge of the desk. Inhaling deeply, I pulled open the bottom drawer of the desk that had my purse in it, reached in like it was a grab bag, and pulled out my phone. Inhaling, I leaned my head back, and closed my eyes briefly before lifting my head, exhaling, and opening my eyes. With resolve, I began pressing the numbers as they were listed on the card.

As the phone rang, my stomach churned like a man on a motorcycle was driving figure eights and popping wheelies in there. My heart raced, and my palms were damp. My fingernails tapped with rapid speed on the desktop as I waited. I would only allow four rings before hanging up. It was answered on the third ring by a pleasant-sounding woman, “Good afternoon; Jeffrey Carrington’s office.”

“Hello, may I speak with Jeff Carrington, please,” I said.

“May I ask who’s calling, please?”

“This is Nikki Carmichael.”

“Do you have an account with us, Ms. Carmichael?”

“No ma’am, this isn’t business related.” Fuck, I’m being screened. Maybe I’m not important enough to talk to him.

“Mr. Carrington is on another call at the moment, may I transfer you to his voicemail so you can leave a message?”

“Yes, please. Thank you.” What the hell am I doing? This is crazy. I should hang up before his machine picks up …

“Hi Jeff, you may not remember me. It’s Nikki; we met briefly Friday night. Connor gave me your card. If you have time, you can call me back on my cellphone.” I left my phone number. It was on him now to either call me back or not.
I pressed end on the call, and a surge of regret washed over my body. I couldn’t help but question if I should’ve even made the call in the first place. Why was I throwing myself at this guy? I picked up the card, slid it back into the outside pocket of my purse, and zipped it in.The message was on voicemail now, and I couldn’t take it back no matter how much I regretted making it. All I could do now was hope his voicemail malfunctioned.

SORM excerpt

I heard knuckles rap against the open door. My head popped up, a spoon of batter I’d been sampling pressed between my lips, caught in mid-moan, to see Dex standing there wearing an amused smirk. “Yeah, hate to interrupt…whatever the hell it is you’re doing in here, but you have a special request.”

Pulling the spoon out of my mouth, I swallowed the lump of chocolate, noting that it could use a pinch more sugar, and shook my head. “I don’t take special orders.” Yet. I was too swamped, too early in the business and trying desperately to get a handle on the responsibilities I had now, to even begin considering taking on anything more. As awesome as the opportunity would be…Shit, no, I couldn’t trap myself by biting off more than I could chew.

“Oh, you’ll want to take this one.” Dex’s blue eyes held a devilish twinkle that was only strengthened by the wicked smile spreading across his face.

“Dex…” I sighed. Holding up my hands, covered in flour and cocoa, I arched my eyebrows. “Even if I wanted to, I’m in no condition to go out there right now.”

“Fine, I’ll send him back.”

My mouth gaped open. “Dex!” That was the last thing I wanted him to do. But he was already gone. Spinning around, I searched for the towel I usually kept close to wipe my hands on. I was scrubbing the dried, caked ingredients off my fingers when I heard a throat clear.

“I was told to come on back. I hope that’s okay?”

Damn, would I ever get used to that deep, husky voice? I brought my head up and looked right at Ken’s smiling face. He looked good—too good—standing in my doorway, in my kitchen with his arms spread out to his sides, his hands gripping the doorway. He leaned against the jamb just enough to make the muscles in his arms thicken, stretching the sleeves of the navy shirt. There was a golden firefighter emblem over his left pec, giving me a little thrill. I was dating a firefighter.

“Of course, you’re always welcome back here.” Considering that he’d already seen what a mess I was, I gave up trying to clean myself, and tossed the towel aside. Picking up the spatula standing straight up in the metal bowl, I gave the batter a few more whips. “What brings you by?”

Walking deeper into the kitchen, Kennedy approached my side of the counter and leaned his hip into it. “I was craving more of those cookies.”

“It’s always about the cookies,” I said teasingly, shaking my head.

A shiver tracked through me when Ken traced a finger lightly down the back of my arm. “I have a weakness for sweets.”

I heard the double meaning in his words, and had to work to concentrate on finishing my task. These brownies weren’t going to make themselves. “It’s a good thing that you’re here then. Sweets are my specialty.”

Kennedy leaned closer, setting his mouth against my ear. “That’s why I came to the expert. What are you doing tonight?”

Meet Me in the Garden by Rosa Sophia

February 1, 2015 Uncategorized 1

SOR Meet Me in the Garden VBT BannerGenre: Romance

Memories of another life, and the garden where it all began, keep Amalie Jarvis awake at night.

A columnist for a popular magazine, she attends a function in Palm Beach at the famous Breakers Hotel, only to cross paths with graphic designer Ian Gardner—who appears to hold the key to her visions. The more time they spend together, the more Amalie realizes how much she wants to be with him. And how much she fears admitting that she loves him.

Ian can’t remember the past, but he is drawn to Amalie with an intense passion he’s never felt before.

Many moons ago, they met in a garden. Different names, different faces—but their souls were still the same. Unable to resist her, Ian falls deeply in love. He remains by her side as she battles severe facial pain, not knowing what it is or if it could kill her. Frightened for her, he swears his adoration without ever speaking the words.

But their devotion has dangers, and they’re about to be faced by hazards neither of them could have foreseen…

SORM excerpt

“Amalie, is it getting worse?” Jean repeated, tucking her clipboard against her chest.

“Yes.”

“I’ll hurry the doctor along then. I’ll be right back.”

The minutes passed as though they were hours. Finally, the doctor arrived and introduced himself. He was a middle-aged man with glasses and graying hair, and he greeted Amalie with a warm smile.

“Jean says you’re not feeling too well, so we’ll hurry this along as best we can.”

Remembering previous episodes, Amalie looked him squarely in the eye and croaked, “It’s getting worse. If it gets really bad, I might have a panic attack.” Ian didn’t know that about her, but she’d had them when she was younger. When the pain hit in high school, she’d been unable to breathe, and she’d sobbed and gasped, certain she was dying, until the worst of the pain had passed.

The doctor nodded as though he’d heard this before. “Okay. We’ll go as quick as we can.”

Each image taken of the inside of her mouth was more awkward than the last. Amalie had to open her mouth wide, which made the shocks lancing through her face worsen, and Jean inserted some kind of device into her mouth. The shape of it made her very uncomfortable. When it was in place, she had to bite down on it, after which Jean would press a button and the picture would be taken. A series of images appeared on a screen to the right, Amalie’s teeth from various angles. Although she was not a dentist, she saw nothing odd about them.

She wasn’t sure how much time had passed or how many x-rays they’d taken before she began to fall apart. They’d turned off the television at her request, but the light in the room was so blaring it was playing havoc on her senses.

As Jean prepared the device again, Amalie cringed when another pain in her face made her stomach churn. She was clutching the arms of the chair, digging her nails in, her chest heaving. She could feel her eyes begin to water. She breathed out her mouth; breathing through her nose only caused more pain.

She glanced up and saw Jean set the tool down.

“How are you doing?”

Amalie forced words out between her quivering lips. “Not good. It’s bad, very bad.” Unable to handle it anymore, she groaned and curled up, rocking to the side.

This was when she drifted away. She was no longer herself. Darkness fell over her, and she knew that anything she said or did, or how she reacted, was not anything Amalie would have done. Amalie was no longer there. Only the pain presided over her body. It was the only real thing inside her. She became the pain.

Somewhere out of the darkness, Jean asked her if she wanted the light turned off. Amalie heard her own voice emerge as a weak mumble, and within seconds the light was out. A moment later, she squinted through the shadows and saw a white lab coat. The voice of Doctor Horowitz encouraged her to go to the hospital, and asked if there was anyone they could call. She was in no condition to drive.

The pain slammed against her cheek, like a chisel being driven straight into her bone.

“Do you have any family here?”

The question was innocent enough, but as the stabbing continued from the inside, Amalie thought of her mother, then her father, then her distant relatives in Maine, and her cousins, aunts, and uncles scattered across the country. Somehow she managed to say no. The memories would fade later, but she did drag her cell phone out of her pocket and hand it to the doctor, telling him to call the one man who would help her, who had promised to be there for her whenever she needed him, the man who made her feel safe.

Ian Gardner.
